… and now a TR-7 with a D-104 …

Sunday, March 27, 2022

In the past week, I successfully wired up a new-to-me D-104 mic for the Drake TR-7. In preparation for the big DX contest this weekend, a lot of stations were testing their stations late last week, and I had a chance to try out the mic.

I made contacts with stations in the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Madeira Island, an island north of the Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa. All that was on 15 meters.

I heard Australia on 10 meters but was unable to break the pre-contest pile up.

Now the flip side is I don’t know what sort of audio quality I’m getting with the D-104. I need to talk to some stateside stations and check the audio.

Another issue is that I don’t have the PTT working with the mic. In fact, I can’t get any PTT to work if I ground any of the four mic pins. I’m not sure if there’s a problem with the radio or there’s something obvious that I’m just missing. I’ll continue to check it out.
